Aton, MAP International Provide Medicine Where Most Needed

After years of symptoms that kept growing more severe, 12-year-old Renato was finally getting better. He was able to talk again. His muscle spasms were becoming less frequent. And he was beginning to smile.

Renato, who lives in the Philippines, has Wilson’s Disease, a rare genetic disorder that affects one out of every 30,000 people worldwide. The illness causes excessive copper build-up in the body and, if left untreated, can cause severe brain damage and death.

Aton Pharma, Inc. is providing help for children like Renato through its International Patient Assistance Program, which is managed by the nonprofit agency Medical Assistance Programs (MAP) International. Aton seeks to improve the quality of life for people who need its medicines by enhancing and expanding the availability of its products. Aton supplies MAP with specialized medication to treat illnesses such as Wilson’s Disease. MAP, in turn, distributes those medicines to people in some of the world’s poorest areas.

“As a specialty pharmaceutical company with products worldwide, Aton Pharma is devoted to eradicating rare diseases across the globe,” said Michael G. Wells, President and CEO for Aton. “MAP helps us meet our philanthropic goals by ensuring that our medicines are going where they are most needed.”

Michael Nyenhuis, president of MAP International, said Aton plays an important role in treating the world’s sick.

“Like the diseases they treat, the medicines that Aton provides are very unique,” he said. “Were it not for the International Patient Assistance Program, people in the developing countries we serve would have no access to these medicines. Their doctors would have no way to treat these rare diseases.

“The fact that Aton is so dedicated to providing this service is really a testament to their philanthropic commitment.”

MAP International works with companies like Aton to distribute more than $230 million in donated medicines to more than 110 countries each year. MAP also operates healthcare programs and health clinics on four continents.

Aton Pharma, as a global specialty pharmaceutical company, provides unique medicines to patients around the world. Aton is a global leader in providing essential treatments for rare diseases.
